Be visible on Google and LLMs with your WordPress website

Many people ask me if WordPress is good for SEO? Yes, it is. But other CMS (Content Management Systems) like Squarespace, Wix, or Adobe Experience are also good. It’s not so much about the CMS, but about what you make of it. You probably use the Yoast Plugin for your SEO. I think that’s an absolutely great plugin. But green lights in Yoast don’t mean you’ll be found.
SEO needs the following:

All of this is possible with WordPress out of the box. So if you’re not on WordPress, then wait with a migration just because you heard somewhere that WordPress is good for SEO. Write to me and we’ll look at the whole thing together.

If you are already on WordPress, then write to me too and we’ll optimize the website.

Let’s look at the three SEO areas mentioned above in detail.

Your WordPress websites needs relevant text – for SEO and for visitors

A website needs text. That’s important. Because Google needs to understand what your website is about. Most important of all is that you describe your offer. So that people looking for your service can find you. It is advisable to start with a keyword research here. This way you know what users call your offer.

service page vs blog postYou create the offer pages in WordPress as Pages. These are static pages that don’t change often. (In this official WordPress video you can learn more about the difference between Pages and Posts.)It is also advisable to publish editorial content. This can be a blog post, a guide article, news, etc. The name doesn’t matter, the main thing is that you pick up users at a problem point. Share news, instructions, or helpful tips. Show your expertise. Here again, a keyword research is important beforehand.

If you have identified a specific keyword, it is important that you use it on the page. Specifically here:

  • In the URL
  • In the H1 heading
  • In the body text
  • In the Meta Title & Meta Description
  • In the Alt-Tag of the images – if it makes sense

Especially for Meta Title and Meta Description, Yoast is a great plugin for SEO. In this blog article I go into more detail on where it makes sense to include keywords.

Technical SEO for WordPress

By default, WordPress has a good basis for technical SEO. Right at the beginning you will have to choose a theme. Here you can actively exert influence. It is advisable to use a theme that loads quickly. For example, I recommend OceanWP.

Furthermore, it is important that you have a speaking URL structure. It should not be www.yourwebsite.ch/postid-1295, but www.yourwebsite.ch/blog/tips-for-financial-planning. In WordPress, speaking URLs, also called permalinks, can be set up under “Settings” -> “Permalinks”.

Another important technical point is indexing.

For your website to appear in search results, it must be indexed. Sounds logical – but it’s a common stumbling block. Especially with WordPress, it often happens that when setting up the website, the option “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” remains active. You can find this setting under Settings → Reading. It’s practical during development – but catastrophic if it remains live. Then even the best page cannot be found.

You can check if your site is indexed, for example, via Google Search, with the query site:your-domain.ch. For small sites, this gives you a rough idea of how many pages Google knows. For larger sites, I use Google Search Console, there under Index → Pages. Here you will find a detailed overview of which pages are indexed, which have been excluded – and why.

These were three examples of the technical basis for WordPress: fast theme, speaking URLs, and indexing.

Finally, we come to Off-page SEO. Everything that happens outside your website.

Off-page SEO for WordPress

Off-Page SEO includes everything that happens outside your website. This primarily includes backlinks (i.e., links from other websites), but also mentions. This has nothing to do with WordPress anymore. Off-Page SEO is independent of the CMS.

Google interprets external references as a sign of trust: If others link to you, your content must be relevant. I don’t believe in bought backlinks. In my projects, we focus on content that truly helps and is therefore shared or linked to on its own.
