My Experience with the Swiss Hosting Provider Cyon: An Honest (and Positive) Review

I recently switched my website hosting provider to the Swiss provider Cyon.

In this article, I’ll share what I like about the service offered by my new hosting company. The article reflects my personal opinion and highlights pros and cons that are important to me. I’m an SEO specialist and WordPress supporter. As such I know a thing about websites, but I’m not a hosting expert.
No one paid me for this article, but it contains some affiliate links. If you click the links AND decide to choose Cyon, I’ll earn a couple of francs. đŸ’”

Benefits of Cyon Hosting at a Glance

  1. You can quickly create a staging environment for your website.
  2. “They do everything” domain migration for one domain included
  3. Comprehensive online documentation
  4. Fast customer support via email
  5. Phone support
  6. Non-product-related: WordPress community support

1. You can quickly create a staging environment for your website.

Cyon offers an integrated staging service. This was the main reason I switched to Cyon, as my previous hosting provider didn’t include this in my plan.
In a staging environment (also called a dev environment), you can test changes to your website before they go live. This is ideal for avoiding errors.

I had previously evaluated staging plugins for WordPress, but switching to Cyon turned out to be more cost-effective than paying for a staging plugin monthly.

2. “They do everything” domain migration included for one domain

I procrastinated on switching hosting providers. I was afraid of messing things up and my website would go offline.
I was super relived when I saw that Cyon offers a free “migration service” for one domain, including associated email addresses. Each additional domain costs CHF 149.00 (as of October 2024).

I coordinated the migration timing with the Cyon team, and after that, I had nothing to worry about. Simply cool!

3. Comprehensive online documentation

From using plus addresses to frequently asked questions about the migration service, protecting folders/files from unauthorized access, and adjusting PHP configurations. I usually find help for my concerns in their extensive support documentation. Hats off to Oliver Orange, who, I believe, writes most of the documentation.

4. Fast customer support via email

I don’t know how they do it, but during office hours, I always receive a helpful response from the Cyon support team super quickly. I appreciate not having to deal with AI chatbots beforehand.

5. Phone support

If calling is easier for you, Cyon also offers phone support at no extra cost. ⭐

6. Non-product-related advantage: Cyon supports the WordPress community

Cyon supports the local WordPress community in Basel. And their swag is top-notch. I’ve been wearing the promotional T-shirt for two years now, and it still looks great 🙂

Disadvantages of Cyon Hosting

Disadvantages is a strong word. There are a few things I miss. First of all, Cyon is only available in German till date. Since you’re reading this blog post in English, it might affect you too.

  1. Cyon is only available in German
  2. Other hosting providers are cheaper
  3. Scheduling emails in Webmail is not possible

1. Cyon is only available in German

Unfortunately, the cPanel and all support documentation are only available in German. I’ve often wanted to recommend the service to international colleagues but realized, “Oops, it’s not possible.”

Who knows, maybe an English version will be available someday. Perhaps by WordCamp Europe in Basel? 😉

2. Other hosting providers are cheaper

Compared to national and international hosting providers, Cyon isn’t the cheapest. There are offers starting at €2.49 per month. My previous Swiss host cost 4.30 CHF per month.

Currently, I pay 12.90 CHF per month for Cyon. However, the price difference is absolutely worth the extra service and friendliness!

3. Scheduling emails in Cyon Webmail is not possible

Unfortunately, Cyon Webmail doesn’t offer a feature to write an email and schedule its sending. I often work in the evening and want my emails to be sent at 8 a.m. the next day.

We know this “Schedule Send” feature from Gmail, for example.

Conclusion: Why I think Cyon is the best web hosting in Switzerland

Cyon has fully convinced me with its user-friendliness, excellent support, and practical features like the staging environment. Despite slightly higher prices, you get unbeatable service that saves you a lot of time and stress.

Try Cyon now

Good luck with your website! 🚀
